Mountain of Information

I was tasked to design an infographic for a cause, conduct research, and collect data that supports my argument. That information must then be presented creatively and engaging for the viewer.

The infographic raises awareness of the $12 billion deferred maintenance issue in the U.S. National Parks. This information is backed up by data on aging National Park Service assets, underfunding, and results of an increase in park visits.

The Gathering

Discovery & Moodboard

All the data that was used for the infographic was collected through the National Park Service and government websites. With the information gathered, I developed an outline to organize the information into sections and storyboarded the layout to ensure a logical flow.

NPS Posters

After conducting research and looking at trends, I created a mood board. The primary inspiration comes from National Park Service Posters published throughout the years and it’s logo.

Range of Visualization

Graphing Data

For data visualization, choosing the proper chart or graph was based on what showed the data clearly and easy to digest. The charts have colors and style that are consistent for coherence.

Hierarchy & Layout

It was challenging to lay out the visual elements and type information without confusing the viewer and getting them lost among all the text information. To guide the reader, I used color to group blocks of information, added lines to guide the viewer, and established a visual hierarchy using headings, subheadings, and body text.

The goal was to design an infographic poster that explains the threat to our National Parks. I had to consider data visualization, hierarchy, and layout. Lastly, the overall design was inspired by National Park Service posters to keep to their aesthetic.
